What to Expect When Arriving for Inpatient Mental Health Services
We know this can be a difficult time, and we're here to help every step of the way. Upon arrival at HBHH, you will be greeted by a receptionist who will ask you to fill out a registration form. Please bring the following with you:
- A form of identification
- Details about your symptoms and the reasons for potential care
- The registration process is quick
- The next step is to be seen by a nurse for a no cost assessment
- Mental health guardianship/custody/foster care placement paperwork, if applicable
- Insurance information
We understand this is a complicated time for you, which is why we make registration quick and simple. The next step is to be seen by a nurse for the no-cost assessment
The assessment will take place in a quiet and comfortable consultation room, you will meet one-on-one with a nurse for the Intake Assessment. The nurse will ask questions to learn information about you along with relevant details about the behavioral health challenges you are facing.
This information is used to determine:
- Appropriate level of care
- A program that is best fit for your specific needs and goals
- How to begin the outline of a treatment plan
After the nurse completes your assessment and a physician reviews it, treatment recommendations will be provided:
Community Referral
- If a community referral is recommended, one will be provided to you.
Houston Behavioral Outpatient Services
- If HBHH Outpatient services is suggested, you will be contacted within 24 hours.
Houston Behavioral Inpatient Treatment
- A mental health technician will come to document all of your belongings and make sure they are safely and securely stored.
- If applicable, the RN will discuss and document any medication you are currently taking to ensure continuity. Intake staff will escort you back to the assigned unit.
What to Expect with Inpatient Care
We are committed to providing comfort and care. Every patient's healing journey is unique and challenging. The "right" way to healing is the way that works best for you, which is why we treat each patient as an individual and tailor our mental health services to your needs.
Every patient has an individualized treatment plan for best outcomes. Any questions or concerns you have can be answered by HBHH staff before, during, and after your treatment. We will work tirelessly to ensure you receive the best treatment, therapy, medication, and support.
The average length of stay at our inpatient treatment is also individualized and varies from patient to patient. Generally, the average length of stay is five and seven days. Some patients require less time, while others need more time at the hospital.
Once in the unit, a registered nurse will perform a medical screening, a nursing assessment, and a skin assessment. This is to evaluate a patient for any further medical treatment.
Within 24 hours, your assigned psychiatrist will meet with you for an evaluation. They will identify your needs and begin your treatment process. Throughout your treatment, you will be seen regularly by your psychiatrist's nurse practitioner.
Within 24-48 hours, your therapist will meet with you to determine goals and complete the psychosocial assessment.
In addition, discharge planning and aftercare recommendations are discussed with the treatment team who consist of your nurse, therapist, case manager and psychiatry team. Upon treatment completion and discharge, you will receive your individualized aftercare plan.
What Can I Bring?
We recommend you bring the following:
- Change of clothes for up to 5 days. *Laundry services provided
- Slippers
- Sports bra (no underwire)
- Paperback books
- Current medications. *A staff member will assist
*It's important to bring any medications from home before you arrive at the hospital.
Items Not Permitted
For the safety of all patients and staff, the following items are not permitted:
- Electronic items (cell phones, iPods, video games)
- Jewelry (wedding rings are allowed)
- Purses and wallets
- Any glass & metal objects (including underwire bras)
- Scarves, belts, shoestrings, and drawstrings Flammable items (matches, lighters, etc.)
- Drugs & alcohol
- Mouthwash, hairspray, nail polish remover, aerosol sprays (Basic toiletries will be provided by the facility.)
- Stuffed animals, blankets and pillows from home, and hoodie sweatshirts
- Offensive/Revealing Clothing
Environment of Care - Room, Food, Gym, and other Amenities
Your comfort and safety are our top priority while you are receiving treatment at HBHH.
Cell phones are not allowed during your hospitalization. All electronics will be securely stored throughout your stay. However, we do offer multiple times throughout the day for patients to place calls on a hospital provided phone.
Visitation hours will be provided at the time of admission.
Upon arrival to the unit, you will be given all necessary hygiene products (deodorant, shampoo, soap, body wash, toothpaste and toothbrush, comb, lotion, and feminine hygiene products).
Three nutritious meals a day: breakfast, lunch, and dinner as well as snacks are provided to all patients.
Our dietary staff will accommodate specific dietary requests, such as vegetarian meals and food allergies or restrictions.
Every unit has access to an outdoor courtyard which can be used for exercise, scheduled smoking times, or just for a breath of fresh air. All units have access to a no-cost laundry option for all patients.
